چکیده

Due to the inherent bandwidth burstness, variable-bit-rate (VBR) encoded videos are very difficult to be effectively transmitted over clustered video servers for achieving high server bandwidth utilization and efficiency while guaranteeing QoS. Previous bandwidth smoothing schemes tend to cause long initial delay, data loss and playback jitters. In this paper, we propose a content-based bandwidth smoothing scheme, called CBBS, which first splits video objects into lots of small segments based on the complexity of picture content in different visual scenes so that one segment is exactly including one visual scene, and then, for each segment, a constant bit rate is allocated to transfer it. Performance evaluation based on real-life MPEG-IV traces shows that CBBS scheme can significantly improve the server bandwidth utilization and efficiency, while the initial delay and client buffer occupancy are also significantly reduced.

Placement of Multi-rate Smoothed VBR Video Objects to MZR Disks

MZR(Multi-Zone Recording) disks are widely used for their high overall bandwidth and capacity nowadays. Since MZR disks show different bandwidths and capacities depending on the zone, data placement schemes for traditional CAD(Constant Angular Density) disks are not suitable for MZR disks. Especially, since the performance of continuous media servers strongly depend on the block placement schem...

An Efficient Hierarchical Modulation based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Transmission Scheme for Digital Video Broadcasting

Due to the increase of users the efficient usage of spectrum plays an important role in digital terrestrial television networks. In digital video broadcasting, local and global content are transmitted by single frequency network and multifrequency network respectively. Multifrequency network support transmission of global content and it consumes large spectrum. Similarly local content are well ...

A Two-Tiered On-Line Server-Side Bandwidth Reservation Framework for the Real-Time Delivery of Multiple Video Streams

The advent of virtualization and cloud computing technologies necessitates the development of effective mechanisms for the estimation and reservation of resources needed by content providers to deliver large numbers of video-on-demand (VOD) streams through the cloud. Unfortunately, capacity planning for the QoS-constrained delivery of a large number of VOD streams is inherently difficult as VBR...

Performance Evaluation of Smoothing Algorithms for Transmitting Prerecorded Variable-Bit-Rate Video

The transfer of prerecorded, compressed video requires multimedia services to support large uctuations in bandwidth requirements on multiple time scales. Bandwidth smoothing techniques can reduce the burstiness of a variable-bit-rate stream by prefetching data at a series of xed rates, simplifying the allocation of resources in video servers and the communication network. Given a xed client-sid...

Bandwidth-buffer Tradeoff for Delivery of Pre-recorded Videos over Multiple Smoothing-servers

The amounts of available resources such as memory buffer and network bandwidth are limited and varied for different multimedia systems. When a request is coming, the system needs to decide on request's admission based on available resources for providing guaranteed QoS. Assume that there are m smoothing-servers on the transmission path. Conventional approaches need O(m*n) time, where n is the n...
